Style fact vs style fiction: the truth to being stylish!

Posted by  on 0 Comments

As a mother/daughter style duo women often say to us “you always look good, but you were born into this industry so it would be easy for you”. This isn’t always the case…

Yes, Sam and I were both bought up in creative/artistic families however, if we look good it’s not by accident…

It is because we know our true personal style and how to portray it, whether we are at work, at the gym, doing groceries or at a black tie event. It is not because of the industry we are in but because we know what makes us feel good and we style ourselves accordingly.

What is true personal style and how do I get it?

“Style is when you find your inner beauty and portray it with confidence.” S & J.

True personal style is a way of saying who you are to the world without speaking. For some, to possess true personal style may mean overcoming a few common and limiting style beliefs…

How many of these limiting beliefs do you hold?

Limiting belief: I need lots of money to be stylish.

Stylish fact: A $1000 handbag does not instantly make you chic. Style must be learnt, acquired and practiced. You cannot buy style, you must earn it!

Limiting belief: Style is only for celebrities, models and fashion types.

Stylish fact: Advertisers and the media want you to feel inferior. And the worse you feel, the more confused you are, and the less confident in your appearance and abilities you are, the more the media loves you.

Because they make money from your insecurities. Think about it. Have you ever seen a commercial that says, “You are fabulous just the way you are and your perfume, clothing, skincare, lipstick, etc. won’t make a difference!”

Us either!

So, here is our point proven: the more the media make us feel inadequate, the more “solutions” and “hope” they can sell to us. Imagine how many companies would go broke if every woman woke up one morning and decided she was beautiful just as she is!

Limiting belief: Style is innate.

Stylish fact: Good genes won’t help you find the right jeans. Even if you’ve spent your life surrounded by stylish people, places and things, there’s no guarantee you’ll be stylish.

The same works in reverse. Personally, I (Sam) grew up with a very talented mother who knew her stuff about sewing, colour, art, design and fashion. In fact, when I was a child, Mum often took me along as she sold her handmade garments to the trendy clothing boutiques in Paddington, Sydney.

While this experience didn’t make me stylish, I do believe my environment and creative genes have been a blessing and helped me along the way. Similarly my own daughter, Jordi, has been surrounded with all things stylish for most of her life, but she still had to work hard to define and evolve her own style – attributes she brings to our company today!

So, even if you are surrounded by style, you must still take your own journey and learn the skills to experiment with colour, cuts and changing fashion!

Limiting belief: Style should be effortless.

Stylish fact: Style requires honesty, discipline, determination and commitment. Yes, commitment – a commitment to become the person you truly want to be.

Have faith in yourself and the journey you are on. Be mindful and recognise who you are and what you want to portray to the outside world. Be true to your personality. Don’t wear something because someone else looks good in it.

Your style is the outward expression of your mother nature-given beauty. Be disciplined! Don’t give yourself a hard time! Start by making small changes and keep the faith when you get it wrong – none of us are perfect, we all make mistakes.

Limiting belief: You have to be slim to be stylish.

Stylish fact: Style is not about the size you wear, but rather how you wear your size. Naturally, if you aren’t at your ideal healthy weight you are probably not going to feel your most comfortable.

However, this is no reason why you can’t still be stylish. Fashion is no longer totally ignoring the petite or larger woman and with clever styling, thinking outside the box and some creativity, these “non-industry standard” sizes can and do look stylish.

I have turned many petite and plus-sized clients’ lives around by helping them realise that looking stylish and wearing fashionable clothes can be achieved once they see that the problem isn’t “I am too big/too small”, but rather how they are dressing and the choices they are making.

Limiting belief: Wearing the latest fashions will make me stylish.

Stylish fact: Fashion trends aren’t stylish until you make them your own! Fashion is always shifting, evolving and inspiring us to look at our world in a fresh, new light.

In order to stay modern it is vital to be in touch with what is new. That said, style is achieved when you interpret and adapt the fashion (trends) of an era to what suits you best – your body shape, colour palette, lifestyle and taste.

The art of combining your own style with the latest fashion trends is something you will learn – but be warned: fashion has a way of luring us in with its glamour, glitz and celebrity endorsements.

It’s easy to believe you are “unstylish” if you do not conform or embrace “what’s in”. To counteract this, you have to be totally honest with yourself and determine if a look that is on-trend is appropriate to your age, figure or the image you’re trying to create. If not, you need to work out how to adapt the trend to suit your personal requirements or avoid it all together.

The most wonderful thing about style is that it is something anyone can achieve and possess. To some it comes more naturally and to others it is a skill that needs to be learnt and continually practiced until it becomes second nature.

To have style is to be comfortable in your own skin and confident that the choices you make are perfect for your physical and emotional self, and your lifestyle. To be stylish, you must determine your own personal style – really get to know yourself and be totally honest in the process.

It is crucial you see yourself through your own eyes and not how others see you – if you don’t like the shape of your legs, it’s not going to matter how many times your partner tells you how great they are.

It may make you feel less conscious of them but it will not make you change your perception of them. This is why you must assess your physical and personality assets (the ‘good bits’) and determine what is to be enhanced or hidden.

  1. Feel happier within yourself;
  2. Inspire others to be their best;
  3. Love and feel good about yourself (as the old saying goes: “if you don’t love yourself how can you expect anyone else too?”);
  4. Be making the most of your life and not just surviving or going through the motions;
  5. Appreciate and respect yourself – yes, even your favourite and not-so-favourite bits!
  6. Feel empowered and confident;
  7. Understand that personality isn’t what first impressions are made on;
  8. Take pride in your appearance and actions;
  9. Be a positive role model to those around you;
  10. Embrace, enhance and nurture your mother nature-given beauty!
