Discover your style this season with our “how to” style board!

Like us, your social media accounts have probably been inundated with Autumn must have’s and brands wanting you to indulge in their new season stock.

Where it is great to be updated it can also be confusing when there is so much to choose from which in turn, can leave you feeling uninspired and lost when the time comes to actually having to shop.

One of the most beneficial tools you can have at the beginning of a new season is a “style board” (a collection of images and items that resonate with you and how you would like to “style” your look).

Creating a “style board” is something we do with many of our regular clients at the start of a season as it not only helps them visualise what their style and wardrobe can look like it also helps us understand what they personally like and where we can expand and enhance their style further.

Benefits of a Style Board?

  • Inspires you to create a LOOK for the season ahead.
  • Keeps you on track of your OWN personal style.
  • Gives you ideas when you feel LOST.
  • Eliminates buying clothes and accessories that DON’T really suit you.
  • CREATES inspiration for dressing on a daily basis.
  • Encourages you to STEP outside of your comfort zone.
  • Will assist in creating a WORKABLE colour palette for your wardrobe. For example base colours and fashion colours.
  • Is a VISUAL reminder of how you would like to dress and style yourself.

So what IS a Style Board?

It is a board, document, cork board, scrap book or pintrest account of items that you LOVE, fashion that depicts YOUR style and looks that you want to make your OWN for the season ahead!

Below is an example of Jordi’s “Style Board for Autumn/Winter ’16.

“My style board shows items/looks that have a quirky rock-chic influence to them with a touch of femininity. These particular styles are always in my wardrobe, however, for Autumn/Winter ’16 it is depicted with tulle, chiffon, fur and leather with a mix of structured and floaty designs”

A style board can also include items that you see in magazines, social media etc that resonate with how you would like to dress and things you feel would update your existing wardrobe.

Below is an example of Sam’s Autumn/Winter ’16 style board.

“My style board is often nothing fancy but rather a reminder of items and looks I love for when I am shopping. Kind of like a visual shopping list!” Sam x.

How to create a Style Board:

It is a process that you can make as simple or advanced as you wish. As you can see above Jordi likes simplicity, whereas Sam likes to layer style boards with accessories and sometimes include swatches of fabric colours and even household furniture items such as cushions to create the best colour vision.

Creating a style board should be fun, not hard work. There are two simple steps!

  1. Select images you love: try clothing websites of stores that you visit regularly, online shops and even add in some designer inspiration.
  2. Paste them into a publisher document: this is where you can keep it simple or get extremely creative, just make it appealing for YOU to look at, remember, you want it to INSPIRE you!

Note: While it is fun to create a board of “lust haves” to update your old winter wardrobe, DO NOT rush into purchasing new season items unless they are pieces that;

  • are in your personal colour palette,
  • will work if placed on your style board,
  • you have other items already to wear them with. (if not you then have to realize you need to buy more items to make this piece work, and that can be a costly way to build your new season wardrobe),,
  • fit you and your lifestyle perfectly, and
  • you adore!

Last Tip…

Have fun and let your creative side run wild. After all, this is YOUR STYLE and there is no right or wrong way to define it!
